Cleveland County Writer Shares Mooresboro Grandparents' World War II Love Story in New Book

World War II changed the lives of most people on earth at the time, says author Matthew Tessnear of Cleveland County. The war led to death and destruction for millions who faced dangerous conditions almost unimaginable today. But the time period also resulted in new life through the numerous romances that blossomed as brave service members exchanged letters with their sweethearts back home.


GWU student, former soccer coach honored for their volunteer work

A Gardner-Webb University (GWU) student and a former children's volunteer soccer coach in Cleveland County, was tapped as Youth Volunteer of the Year for 2023.

Encouraged by her GWU adjunct professor John Miller, Ashley Wilson began volunteering at HOPEWorks in Rutherford County, a free after-school program for middle and high schoolers. Soon Ashley developed a passion for HOPEWorks as students need encouragement and hope.

Paying honor to native son Earl Scruggs on his 100th birthday

The celebration of Earl Scruggs' 100th birthday on January 6 - his actual birth day - at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville was truly an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event, Mary Beth Martin said. Martin, the executive director of the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, was among the packed crowd at the Ryman as bluegrass artists from across the country paid tribute to the Cleveland County native.

Special Olympics NC athletes win bronze medals at championship

Team does well at 2023 Special Olympics North America Softball Championship.

Thirteen Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) softball athletes and five coaches competed in the 2023 Special Olympics North America (SONA) Softball Championship, winning the bronze medal in their division. The event was held Sept. 14-17, 2023, at Peaks View Park in Lynchburg, Virginia. This was the second year the tournament has been held in Lynchburg.


Cleveland Co. Fair celebrates almost a century of food, fun, and good times!

According to information on the American Folklife Center's 'Local Legacies' web site (https://memory.loc.gov/diglib/legacies/loc.afc.afc-legacies.200003238/), the Cleveland County Fair began as, "...the brainchild of the Shelby Kiwanis Club in 1924," and "...has grown every year since then in size, number of activities, and attendance." The Fair's official info states the Fair was started in 1924. That puts this long-running, fun-filled local event at
almost a century old and counting!


Liberty Mountain opens September 15

Liberty Mountain: The Revolutionary Drama opens for its eighth season this Friday, September 15 at the Joy Performance Theatre in downtown Kings Mountain.

The play shares the personal trials many families faced during the period of the Battle of Kings Mountain in the South during Cornwallis' Southern Campaign.
