Wake the World on Moss Lake postpone until September 11, 2023

Due to the forecast, the event is moved from August 28, 2023 to September 11, 2023

It is time for fun in the sun and water for those who may not typically have the opportunity to participate in traditional water sports.

Wake the World, a non-profit organization that offers recreational water sports events for disabled or disadvantaged children or adults, will once again hold an open day of skiing and water tubing at Moss Lake at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023.


Golden Knights drop in on the American Legion World Series

On Saturday, August 12, The United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team greeted guests at Shelby Airport from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Team members arrived promptly at 9 a.m., as posters, booklets, and stickers were placed on the table, and people poured in to meet these soldiers and get their autographs.


Hot Nights Cool Rides will soon roll into Forest City

The 31st annual Hot Nights Cool Rides in Forest City begins Friday, August 18 with a free cruise-in at the Park on Pavilion Square (POPS) beginning at 6pm with music by Ocean Blvd Band.

Saturday, August 19, car registrations begin at 9am and continue until noon. Cost is $30 per vehicle.There will be plenty of food vendors, restaurants are open and stores are also open for shopping.

An awards ceremony begins at 7pm for the more than 400 cars competing in one of the largest car shows in the Southeast. Plenty of parking off Main Street. Bring a chair. Stay all day.


Something to sing about

7th Inning Stretch Festival begins and ends with music

Music lovers can find something to sing about from the time the 9th Annual 7th Inning Stretch Festival opens at 3:00 PM until it closes at 10:00 PM.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, the festival, with two music stages and plenty of food, trinkets, and games, will fill the streets on three sides of Shelby's uptown Court Square and spill over onto South Lafayette Street to the Graham Street intersection.


Cleveland Masonic Lodge #202 Charity Bass tournament presents $5,000 check

A very dedicated group of fishermen took part on Saturday, May 3, 2023 in the Cleveland Masonic Lodge's 3rd Annual Charity Bass Fishing Tournament at Moss Lake's Main Landing. The money raised - which later amounted to over $16,000 - will benefit, according to the flier, the Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health Services.


Burns Bulldogs get first-ever NCHSAA State 2A baseball championship

Burns High School Bulldogs head baseball coach Alex Leonhardt knew the obvious question - "How did it feel winning the 2A state championship?" - was going to come up eventually so he had his answer ready; it was a short, sweet, and got to the point, "It was a surreal feeling."


CCRM still going strong and committed to helping others

The Cleveland County Rescue Mission (CCRM) is still in the business of helping people and that isn't going to change any time soon, if ever, according to Mr. Micheal A. Woods, CEO/President of Western Carolina Rescue Ministries and Cleveland County Rescue Mission.


Newly remodeled and transformed Shelby Walmart Superscenter Reopens

Walmart customers in Shelby were welcomed inside the newly transformed Supercenter at 705 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby, on Friday, April 21, as their much-anticipated project is now complete. The store's associates marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony, community celebration, and a community inspired mural unveiling by local artist, Sherri Hager.


Shelby minister pens personal book on his father's suicide

Shelby minister Dr. Jim Wooten has penned a very personal book he feels will help many people who have been touched in some way or fashion by suicide. He knows about the issue as he has been touched by it; his father was a suicide.


Don Gibson Theatre's Singer/ Songwriter Symposium starts April 1

The 2023 Don Gibson Singer/Songwriter Symposium begins Friday, March 31 with a "Writers in the Round" night with Cherryville, N.C.'s "Sweethearts of Bluegrass", Darin & Brooke Aldridge, who are also a couple of the judges for the Saturday, April 1, songwriter competition, said Stan Lowery, Executive Director for the theatre.


Township #3 Elementary receives large Spirit Rock

Huge rock can be rented for painting birthday signs; commemorating  special events.

Township #3 Elementary PTO member and a parent of a student at the school, Halie Ruppe, recently noted that on Feb. 17, the school received what she termed, "...an exciting addition to the school grounds in the form of a large, hefty boulder."


Cherryville's Arthurs boxes in Vegas' Master's Boxing Invitational

Cherryville Golf and Country Club owner and operator, Dan Arthurs, is a boxing practitioner of the "Sweet Science" and has been for most of his life. As a matter of fact, according to Arthurs, he has been fighting for most of his life, though many times it was not really for any sort of fame or fortune, and sometimes it had to do with... well, keeping someone from hurting him or his loved ones and friends; basically just staying safe.


Pinnacle Classical Academy

According to a recent media release, on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, representatives of T.C. Strickland Construction, Holland & Hamrick Architects, and the USDA joined students, faculty, and members of the board of directors at the new groundbreaking at the school's Joe's Lake Road campus.
