Earl Scruggs Center's Guitar School starts on March 11

If you've ever wanted to learn how to play guitar and didn't know where or even how to start. And even if you've been playing a while and wanted to hone your chops, then the Guitar School at the Earl Scruggs Center (103 S. Lafayette St., Shelby) may be just the thing for you.

Warrior Fishing Foundation "angling" to help disabled veterans heal

Looking for new veterans to "come, go fishing" as well as for donations to make it happen for them

For retired, disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran Ben Travis, fishing was something he did when he was a kid or a youth. Who knew it would become a veritable life-saver for him, but it certainly did! So much so, he had to spread the word and help out others like him who were needing something to help them like being out on the water and fishing did for him.

"Wreaths Across America Day" brightens graves, cemeteries

The Shelby American Legion and its family of similar organizations participated in "Wreaths Across America Day" on Saturday, Dec. 17. Linda Quinlan, Auxiliary Unit 82 Vice President and PR Chairperson, said of the event, "This is the third year Shelby has hosted this event, and it was again spearheaded by Rebecca Higgins, Past President of Auxiliary Unit 82. Members of the local Benjamin Cleveland DAR Chapter also helped to sell wreaths and promote the event this year."

Sunday, December 11, saw the unveiling of two bronze statues at the Law Enforcement Memorial Plaza on the grounds of the Mt. Holly Municipal Complex as well as a ceremony marking the second anniversary of the tragic death of MHPD officer Tyler Herndon in the line of duty which happened two years ago.

When you think of organizations that are great for young men and women, normally the first ones you think of are the Scouts or Boys and Girls Clubs; groups like that. There is another group however that does great good for young men and women today and that is the JROTC, a.k.a. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Third Annual T & H Equipment Tractor Show a great success

"Good ole country gathering" for several of his friends to show their tractors. For the past three years owner and operator Hal Patterson of T & H Equipment has hosted a tractor show at his place of business. It is something he really loves doing and all of his customers love it as well and get into it in a big way.


Senior Center to sponsor car show, vendor fair

Fancy cars, handmade crafts and specialty vendors will all be part of the Neal Senior Center's October Fest, set for Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. The festival will include a car show and a pop-up vendor fair. All proceeds will benefit the Council on Aging's programs and services.

For the first time since 2019, the Mush, Music & Mutts: NC's Official Fall Liver Mush Festival will be held in Uptown Shelby on Saturday, Oct.15, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.


Local woman memorialized at annual Sarah Sweep

Maybe you have seen the signs each fall asking for volunteers to participate in the Sarah Sweep on First Broad River. You may have participated or seen the photos of the piles of tires, appliances and trash that are pulled out of the river each year in this endeavor.


6 Week ladies Bible study begins at Pfeiffer Cafe & Confections, Sept. 7

A ladies county-wide Bible study will begin at Pfeiffer Cafe & Confections, located at 116 E. Warren Street, Shelby on Wednesday, September 7 through October 12 from 9 AM-11AM.

Best selling author and local Cleveland County native Cindi Wood will be leading the six-week study "Anonymous" .
